Hamilton stepped into the warm spray of the shower and, bracing his hands
against the wall, let the water pour over his bowed head. He jerked his head
back and shook the water out of his eyes then took a long, deep breath.

He missed her.

Jake had only been gone one day, but it was like there was this huge hole in
his life now. He tried to think of what he had done to fill his days before
she came along, but the time before her just seemed empty and meaningless.

He was also worried about her.

He knew she was strong and easily able to take care of herself, but he
couldn't help thinking of all that could go wrong for a girl alone on a
motorcycle trip to New York. It had been all he could do to prevent himself
from jumping on the back of the bike and going with her.

He poured some shampoo into his hand and lathered his hair, and he had just
begun to rinse it out when he heard the dim ring of the telephone. He rinsed
as quickly as he could, but on the third ring he muttered, "Screw it" and
jumped out of the shower. He grabbed a towel as he slipped-slided out of the
bathroom and ran for his bedroom. He lunged across the bed to grab the phone
on the fifth ring, putting the receiver to his ear with a breathless, "Hello!"

"Hamilton?"

"Jake? Oh, man, I didn't think you were ever going to call."

"I'm sorry. It was so late when I got here and Mom was actually in a
talkative mood. I think I almost liked her better when she was uninvolved."
She paused, expecting a chuckle from him, but no sound came through.
"Hamilton?"

"I'm here. Oh, baby, it's just so good to hear your voice. Keep talking."

So, she talked, telling him of her trip to New York and the unusual feeling
of suddenly having an interested mom. He dried himself off as he listened,
letting her talk and basking in the sound of her voice.

"She's asked all sorts of questions about you, you know."

"Really?"

"Yeah. She's so sure we're up to no good - and I can't really argue with her
considering what almost happened - that she wants to take me to her
gynecologist and get me started on the pill."

"Dude, your mom rocks!" He smiled when she laughed. "So...are you going?"

"No."

"Oh."

She grinned at the disappointment in his voice. "Hamilton, I'm already on
the pill."

"You are? Since when?"

"Since...not long after that date from hell we went on."

His eyebrows rose. "I thought you weren't ready for..." His hand moved in a
significant wave as though she could see it.

"I'm not. Yet. But I wanted to be prepared for it when I was."

"Woman, I LIKE your thinking!"

They grinned through the phone at each other.

Jake decided she needed to burst his bubble a little. "Don't go getting your
hopes up, pal. It takes six weeks for the things to kick in, which means we
have about a month left anyway."

"Just in time for the fall semester!"

Her smile faded. "Hamilton, have you talked to Finn?"

"No, I haven't seen him, but I think if he were going to make a stink about
it, we would have heard something by now."

"You think so?"

"Yeah, why would he wait? Are you sure he even saw enough to know you're a
girl?"

"Hamilton, I was standing there wearing nothing but my panties!"

Hamilton closed his eyes, a slight smile flickering on his lips, and said in
a husky voice, "Mmm...I remember."

"Oh, God." Jake sank onto her bed and buried her face against her raised
knees. "I can't believe I let you talk me into that."

His eyes popped open as he said with a big grin, "Actually...I talked you
into sharing a shower with me, and you never did, so you still owe me one."

She grinned but tried to sound stern. "Oh, really?"

He nodded. "Definitely."

She thought for a moment. "Okay, I'll tell you what, you come visit me here
in New York and...I'll take a shower with you. In private this time."

His eyes widened. "Really? Oh, man, can I come right now?"

"One shower, Hamilton. A tame, romantic shower. Don't think this is going to
be some wild free-for-all sex thing."

"Damn."

"Hamilton!" she said warningly.

"Jake!" he said in the same tone, and they shared an affectionate laugh,
before Hamilton turned serious. "Jake, you know we don't have to do anything
you're not comfortable with, right? I'm not coming up there to have sex with
you...well, not unless you want to, of course...I just want to be with you
again. God, this makes sneaking around seem good - at least then I got to
see you."

"I know, Hamilton. I miss you, too." They fell silent for a moment, aching
to be together. Jake took a shuddering breath and tried to sound perky.
"So, when CAN you come?"

He grimaced, sighing in frustration. "Not for two weeks."

"Two weeks! Why?"

"My mom wants me to wait until she and Dad go on vacation, which isn't for
two more weeks."

"That sucks."

"Tell me about it. I couldn't talk her out of it, though."

"Well, how long can you stay, then?"

"As long as you want me to."

"Okay, like, forever?"

One side of his mouth quirked up as he heard the smile in her voice. "Sounds
good to me."

Silence reigned again, neither of them having anything new to tell but not
wanting to let the other go.

"Jake?"

"Yeah?"

"What are you wearing?"

"Hamilton!" His name came out on a laugh. "Why?"

"I just want to know."

She looked down at herself. "Just a T-shirt."

" JUST a T-shirt?"

"And underwear."

"Take it off."

"Take WHAT off?"

"The shirt."

She choked back a shocked laugh. "Why? It's not like you can see me?"

"No, but I'll know." He smiled and used his best pleading voice. "Come on.
What's it going to hurt?"

"Hamilton."

"Please?"

"Oh, hang on."

Hamilton heard a slight clatter as she put the phone done and then some
rustling sounds. A grin blossomed across his face as he settled back against
his pillows and waited for her to come back.

"Okay, it's off."

"Are you wearing a bra?"

"Yes?"

"Take that off too?"

Jake grinned at the hopeful sound of his voice and held the phone in the
crook of her shoulder as she reached behind her to unhook her bra. Deciding
that turnabout was fair play, she asked, "Hamilton, what are you wearing?"

"Nothing."

"What?"

He laughed. "I was in the shower when you called. Hey, you know, that makes
two showers I've missed because of you. You owe me two showers now."

Jake, still contemplating the thought of Hamilton being naked on the other
side of the phone, answered absently, "Nice try, pal. One shower."

She pulled her bra off and dropped it on the floor, then laid back against
the pillows on her bed. "Okay, the girls are free."

"The girls?" Hamilton burst out laughing. "Do you have names for the girls?"

"No, I think that's a guy thing, but feel free."

"I think I'll wait until the girls and I are better acquainted." He paused,
his mind's eye filled with the image of her standing before him in the shower
room. "Though, you know, from what little I saw, the girls are beautiful."

"Oh, stop."

"Stop what?"

"Stop saying...you don't have to say things like that with me."

"Like what? That you're beautiful? What is this problem you have with
accepting compliments? You ARE beautiful."

"No, I'm not."

"You're kidding, right?" His eyebrows drew into a frown.

"No."

"How can you say that?"

"Because I know I'm not beautiful. I can pass for a boy, for God's sake."

"Yeah, a boy who had me and Lena coming on to you."

"So, I make a cute boy. Big whoop."

"And you're a beautiful girl, Jake. Why do you think I can't keep my hands
off of you?"

"Teenage hormones?" She rolled her eyes at his exasperated grunt. "Look,
Hamilton, I'm not some insecure girl with hang-ups about my looks. I'm very
comfortable with how I look, but I grew up around a lot of beautiful women,
so I know what beautiful looks like."

"Well, I think you're incredibly beautiful, so you'd just better get used to
hearing it. Just say thank you and we can get back to important things."

"Thank you," she said softly.

"You're welcome. Now, about the girls..."
